Earlier this month, Facebook launched the heavily anticipated Facebook Dating. We took a closer look at the different features that are being offered, and the main differences between this new platform and existing dating apps in the saturated market of online dating.
Facebook Dating is now available to users who are 18 years and up, and decide to opt in by creating a separate profile. The platform is not currently available on Desktop, and can only be accessed via the Facebook mobile app. Your Facebook friends are automatically excluded from your pool of dating options, which consists of friends of friends, or strangers. Most popular dating apps require a match before a conversation can be struck, such as Tinder. On Facebook Dating, anyone can send a message before being matched, which aligns with Facebook’s mission of creating deeper connections and relationships.
On a more innovative note, Facebook Dating is also offering a feature called “Secret Crush”, which allows users to pick up to 9 profiles in their dating pool that they would like to match with, and if reciprocated, each user will be notified. Facebook Dating also allows you to connect your Instagram account, which widens the array of options to pick a Secret Crush from. Facebook Dating isn’t selling ad space, and is currently free for users to opt into.
We are interested to find out how this new platform will perform against giants such as Tinder or Hinge, or Bumble. Facebook claims to have more data on users, which would allow for more meaningful matches. They have also made it very easy to opt in, and the platform is presented as a mere extension to your already existing Facebook account. On the other hand, to the exception of “Secret Crush”, many dating apps already offer the same features as Facebook Dating. The rise of a new serious competitor will certainly push existing dating apps to innovate and differentiate themselves, which will lead to a more successful and meaningful online dating experience for all.
